The Wall Street Journal published an interesting article titled “The Delicious resilience of Spain's Priorat” about the
Priorat wine region in Catalonia (Spain) describing its resistance to the economic crisis suffered by Spain. The economic crisisin Spain has been in the headlines for months, yet it doesn't seem to have had much of an effect on
Priorat, probably because this extraordinary wine region exports almost the 80% of all its production.René Barbier was the leader of the "Band of Five" who arrived in
Priorat some 25 years ago. Mr. Barbier and four others, including one woman, Daphne Glorian, arrived with very little money but a burning desire to make a great wine from Priorat's old-vine Garnacha and Samsó. (Priorat vineyards were replanted at the turn of the last century.)After Mr. Barbier arrived to
Priorat, other winemakers have successed producing great quality wines, most of them have been awarded with international distinctions: Clos Mogador (René Barbier), L'Ermita, Les Terrasses, Finca Dofí, Camins del Priorat (
Alvaro Palacios), Genium Costers, Genium Ecològic (
Celler Genium), Clos Figueras, Fonts de la Figuera, Serras del Priorat (
Clos Figueras), Prior Pons, Planets (
Prior Pons), Trio Infernal, Trio Infernal Riu (
Trio Infernal) and much more.
